It is important to understand hard drive data recovery
because there are a number of ways in which you can lose the
information on your hard drive. Hard drive data can be lost
from downloading viruses, a conflicting problem between
programs, age and other breakdowns. Just because your
information is saved does not necessarily mean it is safe.
There are some different ways in which you can recover your
hard drive data. The first simply being always backup your
data, whether it be burned onto a CD or on an external hard
drive. It is a good idea to not only back up your data but also
any drivers or program files that may be of particular
importance.
If you have lost data from your hard drive, stop saving
information to that drive. You need to determine what the
problem is, fix it and then you can begin saving to your hard
drive again. Just because your data may have been deleted
doesn't mean it still isn't present. What happens is that the
program is marked as being deleted but it is only copied over
if you hard drive needs more space. Once new information has
been copied over this deleted program, then it cannot be
recovered.
The first step to hard drive data recovery is by booting
your computer using your operating systems disk. You can then
use a testdsk, fdsk or chkdsk command to scan and repair your
hard drive. Many times this can fix your problem and then you
will be back up and running. These commands can be used from a
recovery console, of you are using a Windows operating
system.
FINDNTFS freeware is also a program you can use to recover
you hard drive without reformatting your disk. This program can
locate and recover lost data. It is free and focuses on
recovering NTFS (NT file system) files. You can even boot up
your computer using this if you cannot get into Windows.
The testdsk or chkdsk function is the most important if you
need to recovery hard drive information. These commands are
tools that recover lost partitions and FAT and NTFS files. It
essentially locates, recovers and repairs the partition table
on your hard drive and replaces and partition boot sections.
The majority of the time people reformat their disk because
they can't get into their operating program. By running this
you can boot into your computer and fix any additional
problems.
The above deals with major data deletion but it is possible
to recover a few files you may have accidentally deleted. There
are may undelete programs that can scan your computer and
recover any files you may have deleted which have not yet been
written over. Many of these programs are free like PC Inspector
Recovery Program.
So have hope. All is not lost if you are having hard drive
issues. But to safe guard against any problems because the
issues is not if your hard drive fails but when your hard drive
fails. Make sure you frequently back up your information and
you should run chkdsk or testdsk at least once a year to
determine if any parts of your hard drive may contain
problems.
