It is important to understand hard drive data recovery because there are a number of ways in which you can lose the information on your hard drive. Hard drive data can be lost from downloading viruses, a conflicting problem between programs, age and other breakdowns. Just because your information is saved does not necessarily mean it is safe.

There are some different ways in which you can recover your hard drive data. The first simply being always backup your data, whether it be burned onto a CD or on an external hard drive. It is a good idea to not only back up your data but also any drivers or program files that may be of particular importance.

If you have lost data from your hard drive, stop saving information to that drive. You need to determine what the problem is, fix it and then you can begin saving to your hard drive again. Just because your data may have been deleted doesn't mean it still isn't present. What happens is that the program is marked as being deleted but it is only copied over if you hard drive needs more space. Once new information has been copied over this deleted program, then it cannot be recovered.

The first step to hard drive data recovery is by booting your computer using your operating systems disk. You can then use a testdsk, fdsk or chkdsk command to scan and repair your hard drive. Many times this can fix your problem and then you will be back up and running. These commands can be used from a recovery console, of you are using a Windows operating system.

FINDNTFS freeware is also a program you can use to recover you hard drive without reformatting your disk. This program can locate and recover lost data. It is free and focuses on recovering NTFS (NT file system) files. You can even boot up your computer using this if you cannot get into Windows.

The testdsk or chkdsk function is the most important if you need to recovery hard drive information. These commands are tools that recover lost partitions and FAT and NTFS files. It essentially locates, recovers and repairs the partition table on your hard drive and replaces and partition boot sections. The majority of the time people reformat their disk because they can't get into their operating program. By running this you can boot into your computer and fix any additional problems.

The above deals with major data deletion but it is possible to recover a few files you may have accidentally deleted. There are may undelete programs that can scan your computer and recover any files you may have deleted which have not yet been written over. So have hope. All is not lost if you are having hard drive issues. But to safe guard against any problems because the issues is not if your hard drive fails but when your hard drive fails. Make sure you frequently back up your information and you should run chkdsk or testdsk at least once a year to determine if any parts of your hard drive may contain problems.
