There is free data recovery software available if you should have hard drive problems or if you accidentally deleted some files. There are many recovery software programs available but some are pricey and you may not need all of the options. There is free data recovery software available to recover or restore a deleted partition, data from removable media etc.

It is important to remember that you may not be able to restore all of your data if it is on the hard drive. When you delete a file it is not actually deleted. What happens is that when your computer needs space to save data it will write over the deleted files. If you file has been overwritten then you cannot recover it but quite a lot of deleted data is stored on you hard drive and can be recovered. It should be noted that this software will only work if you haven't physically damaged your hard disk. This software works only on logistic data.

The best free way to recover your data is to back it up regularly. If you regularly back up your data, whether it be on an external hard drive or CD you will always be able to recover it. The following are free hard disk backup and restore utilities; BackupPC Open Source Backup, Amanda Backup and Recovery Software Community Edition, Microsoft SyncToy, Back4Win, Cobian Backup, FreeByte Backup, and Unison File Synchronizer. These files backup and restore specific types of files like e-mail or Microsoft outlook databases, ZIP files, image files and more.

The following programs are free undelete or recovery software. NTFS undelete is for Windows 2000 and above and can restore anything you may have accidentally deleted from the Windows system. PCInspector File Recovery finds and unerases any deleted partitions on your hard drive even if your boot sector is damaged. It can also recover any file that has been deleted on your hard drive as long as it hasn't been overwritten. Avira unerase Personal is a program for non-commercial usage that recovers deleted data from your hard drive. Unstoppable Copier, Roadkil's Undelete, Undelete Plus and SoftPerfect File Recovery are all free programs that recover data files form your hard disk.
